On 24 November 2021, a new paper about industries intensively using intellectual property rights (IPRs) for the EU was published.

This new paper supplements the analysis of the rates of change of IPR-intensive industries with leading indicators that provide early signs of the future trend. These indicators are also known as diffusion indices and do not provide a quantitative forecasting but rather show when the IPR indicators will change from an acceleration to a deceleration phase (or vice versa) up to 7 months in advance.

Diffusion indices have demonstrated that the impact of the 2009 and 2020 crisis were widespread along most of the IPR-intensive industries and that the current recovery phase is more widespread among the industries in France, Spain and Italy.
